L-tyrosine is a powerful aromatic (non-essential) amino acid. It is a building block for the epinephrine, dopamine, thyroid, and norepinephrine hormones. The body uses this amino acid to synthesize protein. L-tyrosine is vital in helping the body when fatigued, stressed, or feeling cold.


Adequate levels of this non-essential amino acid provide a lot of stress-reducing benefits. Stress can cause an inability to complete a task, it can produce other symptoms that can make a person emotionally, mentally or physically ill. Stress reduces norepinephrine levels in brain. Studies show that L-tyrosine a precursor to norepinephrine, increases the rate of norepinephrine production during any stressful situation.


Exercise is another type of stress on human body. A study found that during exercise, taking L-tyrosine can improve physical performance.


In addition to stress, lack of motivation and pleasure response, there may also be symptoms of low dopamine, i.e. restless legs, not wanting to interact with people, low libido, forgetfulness, cravings for sugary foods, and an inability to lose weight.
